Getting Involved in Election 2008

We encourage you to get involved in electing “social work-friendly” candidates at both the state and national level. Our PACE endorsed candidates include Barack Obama for President, and NJ Senator John Adler and NJ Assemblywoman Linda Stender for Congress.

This is a VERY IMPORTANT election, one that will set the course for our nation's future. As social workers, we can help frame a new direction for America. We work with some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens; provide services in schools, hospitals, and clinics; help those coping with HIV, homelessness, mental illness; and work with people struggling to make ends meet, hoping that tomorrow will be a better day.

We welcome your thoughts on the upcoming election and how we as social workers can get involved on the local, state, and national level. What will you be doing this fall to ensure that our next generation of leaders will be sensitive to the needs of those we serve?

This year we are lucky. Mental Health Parity just slipped thru nationally. And both Obama & McCain are candidates that would serve our interests.

Yes, I know that NASW endorced Obama, but, let's be honest: McCain is the most 'liberal' Republican to run in my lifetime...a true centrist with views in many places on the political spectrum.

Professionally, I'll be calling NASW-NJ members to let them know of our congressional endorsements and of GOTV activities. Personally, I've got an Obama sticker on my car and have been calling former co-workers and passing on easy voter registration info for them to give to clients. OH and most importantly...I'll be waking up on November 4th and VOTING.

This is a special message to NASW-NJ members living in South Jersey, specifically the 2nd Congressional District. We've got a great Democratic Challenger to Frank LoBiondo this year in Dave Kurkowski. Dave is a former public school teacher and a small business owner in Cape May. Dave wants to focus on the people who, as you well know, are too often ignored by those in Washington. He also truly has a heart for people and wants to affect positive change in their lives. He is very supportive of Barack Obama, and would be a President Obama's best friend in South Jersey. Please visit www.daveforcongress.com and get involved in this very important race!

This Nov. 4th I'll be at my local polling place, helping people to sign the book and work the voting machines.

Yes, I became one of the "poll workers" last year, after a futile search for work as a Social Worker.

We start work at 5:15am, and work until a half-hour after the polls close! So when you head out to vote, remember your poll workers, and fellow Social Workers, and bring coffee & donuts? There are four poll workers for each district. I guarantee they will be grateful.
